Ligonier Valley Road Sale
Rumored Purchase of the Line by the Pennsylvania Company

Pittsburg, June 14. The Pennsylvania Railroad is at present negotiating for the purchase of the Ligonier Valley Road. It is rumored here to-night that the deal has already been closed, but that cannot be confirmed.
On last Friday Eastern officials of the road spent the day in traversing carefully the whole eighteen miles of the road between Ligonier and Latrobe, inspecting station houses, rolling stock, and all equipment.
The Pennsylvania people came quietly and slipped away like Arabs, the fact of their having been in Western Pennsylvania not leaking out until to-night.
The Ligonier Valley Road is considered one of the most valuable short lines in the State. It passed through the valuable Western Pennsylvania stone quarry region. The wild, picturesque portion of Westmoreland County, through which the road runs, is the picnic ground of Western Pennsylvania; the excursion business is something enormous, and it is thought the Pennsylvania main line covets this.
The road is owned by Mellon & Son, the Pittsburg banking firm and well-known oil men.
