Byers-Allen Lumber Mill
The sawmill plant of the Byers-Allen Lumber company have begun to manufacture
lumber this week. All the latest improved machinery have been secured. From the pulling of the log from the pond up on the mill until it is turned out as dressed lumber is a very short time. There are now at the mill two train loads of logs and about 3,000,000 feet of lumber cut into logs at the logging caps on the mountain ready to be brought to the mill by the new railroad. A log loader which is quite a curiosity soon brings the longs on the train of cars. There is a track on the cars which enable the transfer of the loader from one car to another. A long cable is fastened to the logs probably 200 or 300 feet away and when the machinery is set in motion the log is soon dragged to the cars and swung into position on the car.
The company has purchased an immense tract of timber land, a deed for which has recently been transferred, at a cost of $50,000, and it is the general opinion that the new railroad will cross the mountain and be extended to Somerset next summer.
