Saw Mill And Railroad
The New Lumber Mill Located On The D. R. Marker Farm
Since our report of a week ago the new lumber mill and railroad has become an assured fact. The mill will be located on the D. R. Marker farm, just south of town. An agreement was made with Mr. Marker last Wednesday by which the lumber company obtains a lease for 10 years of about eight acres bordering on the Loyalhanna for which the company agrees to pay $300 per year.
As stated before the mill is to be modern in all its equipments and in connection with
getting the timber from the mountain will employ about 100 men. The men who work on and about the mill will live in Ligonier. The Ligonier Valley railroad will extend its road to the mill and from the mill a road will be made to the mountain and the logs cut and brought to the mill for manufacture. A pond covering about one acre will be made at the mill to float the logs.
A number of men have been at work for several days perfecting plans and making
drawings for the mill and the road. It is thought that work will soon commence and will be pushed forward as rapidly as possible to put the mill and railroad in operation at an early date.
The people of Ligonier should congratulate themselves on their good fortune in obtaining the site of the mill so near town as it will evidently be a good thing for the town and open the way for other enterprises.
