Railroad To Be Built
Managers Here Sight For Saw Mill Near Ligonier Will Employ 80 Men
The people having the matter of building a new railroad from Ligonier to the mountain beyond Mechanicsburg and the cutting of the timber of that section arrived in town Monday and Tuesday of this week. They are along the line that has been surveyed making an inspection and looking after a site for the mill to cut the timber. It is the intention to place the mill on the Loyalhanna near Ligonier, and bring the logs from the mountain and saw them. They desire to purchase or lease about thirty acres for the mill site. Negotiations are in progress with J. N. Boucher, Esq., to purchase part of his farm near town for the purpose. The people looking after this enterprise are W. Byers, of Williamsport, Pa., who is one of the chief movers in the project; Lawrence H. Allen, of Buffalo, N.Y.; Attorney Ruple, of Somerset, Pa., and H. E. Marker, Esq., of Greensburg, C. Grecco, a contractor of Lock Haven, Pa., is here and says if he gets the contract of building the road he will bring at least 100 men here at once. There are other capitalists who are also interested. If the road and mill are built, the company will employ from 50 to 80 men. They will proceed at once to rent all the houses and put up others in town. It is important to the people of town that the mill be located here and not taken to the mountain and every one should encourage the enterprise. It is hoped a suitable site will be secured for the mill near town. Encourage the enterprise, everybody.
