Trouble at Booth & Flinn Stone Quarries

Great excitement prevailed last week over developments at the Booth & Flinn stone quarries at McCance, between the proprietors, Booth & Flinn, of Pittsburg, and certain subordinates at the quarries. From the daily papers of Pittsburg and elsewhere the following is gathered: That on Monday of last week Senator Flinn, accompanied by detectives and experts, visited the quarries and made investigations. The result was that Alex McCance, superintendent of the works, and Maurice Long, timekeeper, resigned and a different management has been put in charge. The next step was an information made by Geo. H. Dosch, Esq., attorney for Booth & Flinn, charging Long with Conspiracy to Defraud. A warrant was issued and Constable Fry brought him before Justice Geiger, of Latrobe, who, after hearing the evidence, held him in $1,000 bail for court.

It appears that for some two years or more, things have not been going on as they should at the quarries. The information charges that the books of said firm show that men are credited with work who never had existence, or at least who were never employed at this point and the wages charged to Booth & Flinn and the money drawn to pay them. It is further charged that men were hired out to other parties and Booth & Flinn charged with their time.

Other arrests are likely to follow. It was claimed at the time that there was a discrepancies of $30,000 but a statement has been made by Senator Flinn that it did not amount to over $5,000, and that owing to conflicting stories a full statement would be given in a few days. The matter has quieted down and a compromise will likely be affected without any further trouble.
