Great Lutheran Day At Idlewild
12,000 People Estimated To Be Present
Largest Crowd of the Season - A Glorious Day - A Happy Crowd -
A Successful Picnic
Thursday, August 6th, was the great Lutheran picnic day at Idlewild. These Lutheran
picnics have attained an almost world-wide reputation. Early in the day the people began
to arrive on foot, on horse-back, by carriage and by the railroads. By noon it was
estimated that fully twelve thousand people were on the grounds and still they came.
Special excursion trains from Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Johnstown, Indiana and
Blairsville brought people by the thousands to famous Idlewild and yet not a single
accident occurred to mar the happiness of the day.
Once upon the ground you see the wisdom and foresight of the management under the
efficient supervision of the Superintendent, George Senft, in providing for the enjoyment
of the multitude. The large dining hall, the auditorium, the merry-go-round, the lake with
its boats, the picture gallery, the ladies' parlor, the check rooms for baskets, etc., the ball
grounds, the springs of fresh water, the historic Loyalhanna, the seats in groves and
nooks, the shade of the mighty forest trees - all are intended for your comfort and
pleasure.
