The New Idlewild Parks

The thousands who have spent pleasant days at old Idlewild will scarcely credit a statement to the effect that it will be lost to them forever, or to be accurate, not exactly lost but swallowed up by the new Idlewild, and unnoticed almost, not because of its own insignificant, but because of its immensity of its possessor. There is no exaggeration in this statement, for it is a cold, solid fact that the new parks, as they are now so completely overshadow the old that it appears almost commonplace. The new one, so large and well arranged, has not only in point of size but in the conveniences provided, entirely swallowed up the old one.

Lake St. Clair is beautiful beyond description, and the Idlewild of other years is no more. The lake is named in honor of Major-General Arthur St. Clair, who once held Idlewild and much more territory by original grant from the United States, in recognition of his distinguished services to his county.

But passing from the lake to the field of sports we find here, too, a wonderful change. It embraces thirty acres of territory and contains a ball parks, croquet grounds, tennis courts and rifle ranges. It is unsurpassed, and has been placed in its present condition at a large expense.

All through, the new Idlewild is beautiful and is daily growing more so. A large force of men are at work every day and when the season opens, everything will be complete and in perfect order. Over $15,000 will be spent before May 30th, in beautifying these grounds, and the result will prove that every dollar has been made to do effective work.

If anything has been omitted in regard to the new Idlewild it is because there is too much to say in one newspaper article but we can and do honestly assure our readers that the description is not exaggerated, and that improvements are all made on the large and liberal scale indicated.

To Superintendent Senft is due the credit of the wonders which have been wrought. Idlewild is his pet, and he has bent every energy to make it the best picnic ground in the country, and he has succeeded.
